Brian Duzan's "The Voidtouched"
C.Burns' "The Branded" |
Some people pray to their gods for strength like fools; others, too smart for their own good, read books. Others, still, train with their sword-arms or their tongues. Not you, though. Somehow, somewhy, you found power through another way, one wrought in fire and pain. You made a sacrifice, then and there, freely given, for powers beyond the ken of mere mortals. And it feels so, so good. You’re the wildcard now. The uncaged flame, burning with passion and leaving ruin in your wake. Everyone else can feel it, too; your fire stokes theirs, filling your new adventuring comrades with furore and frightening the lives of every yokel and maiden lucky enough to cross your path. You’ve never felt so alive! And so what if there’s trouble following you every which way; all the more reason to live life to the fullest, right? Live fast, die young, and make sure you’re not the one who’s gotta pick up all the pieces. [Copied from the playbook itself] |
Duccio Mondanelli's "THE Shinobi"
(BASED ON Brian Farmer's "THE Ninja")
"Someone heard a noise?" asked the guard to his companions. Too late, you thought. While your shadow clones kill the other guards, you put a kunai on the man's throat. "Tell me where the scroll is and your death won't be painful." This playbook let you play a Shinobi, an oriental warrior trained in the magical arts on Ninjutsu. Inspired by various popular manga and anime, this is a playbook for Dungeon World. [Copied from the DTRPG page for the playbook] |
Headpidgeons Productions' "The Princess"
Look. There, on the horizon. See that sun? It burns as hot as our hope. Its light has travelled all this way just to shine on us, and them, and the whole world. So wipe the blood from your face and know that whatever barriers stand in our way, we will overcome them. Because even if we die, our dreams never will. Our hope will last eternal, blazing hot and bright and glorious for a billion years. Little by little, the lives we touch and the lives that those lives touch will make the world brighter and brighter and brighter, until the whole world's hopes twinkle and shine like the stars in the sky. Believe in me. Believe in us. With hope on our sleeves and love in our hearts, we cannot be steered wrong. We will make the cosmos. The Princess is a class that is all about making friends, doing the impossible, and changing the world. This complete class combines femininity, power, and grace in an archetype inspired by feminine heroines like Dorothy Gale, Fionna & Cake, and Usagi Tsukino. The Dungeon World version comes with twenty all new advanced moves to determine your Princess's destiny. [Copied from the DTRPG page for the playbook] |
Dungeon World is a Pen and Paper Role Playing Game written by Sage LaTorra and Adam Koebel. It's based on the same engine as D. Vincent Baker's Apocalypse World, only set in a fantasy world of wonderment and adventure instead of a nuked-out husk of our world.
So what the hell does all of that mean?
buy on DtrpG: to support the publisher (and us too!) | Short answer: Dungeon World is a Fantasy RPG that's Powered by the Apocalypse. Slightly longer answer: The main thing that sets games "Powered by the Apocalypse" are structured differently than most RPGs on the market. Instead of having a designated setting set in stone, or maps already drawn, or long backstories or details all planned out, Dungeon World provides some basic resources and lets the players and Dungeon Master (or DM) fill in the gaps. Did you choose to play The Wizard? Well, there's no one quite like you and your mastery of magic. There can't be another Wizard quite like you - you're The Wizard of the story, and everyone else wishes they were so important. Did you choose to play The Paladin and set out on a Quest to "Slay Amarakto the Cruel, a great blight on the land"? Well, you and the rest of the people playing the game with you are going to have Amarakto the Cruel as some sort of antagonist. The whole point is to Draw Maps, But Leave Blanks and Play To Find Out What Happens. |
Okay, but why use it for a podcast?
Well, as a Dungeon World DM you are encouraged to do as little pre-planning as possible. Since this was the first time half of the players were playing with the group (and the first time playing a P&PRPG for one of them), and winging things is something CW throws at players often, Dungeon World was the perfect fit.
Plus, with it's conversational structure, it works really well recorded as audio.
